I was reading Mill on the Floss because I was so captivated by Eliot’s depiction of Maggie Tulliver, and how Maggie’s problems were narrated as a problem of will. A will that is a problem is often called a willful will. Response to Sara Ahmed's, "Feminist Killjoys (And Other Willful Subjects)" I really enjoyed Sara Ahmed’s article and her discussion about feminists as killjoys. She mentions that feminists are often portrayed as these angry things that ruins society’s happiness by choosing to point out what is wrong with the world instead of what’s right about it.

By framing feminist thought as a critique of happiness, it suggests that the feminist subject should be understood as a “willful subject”. Sara Ahmed presents a lecture on Feminist Killjoys (And Other Willful Subjects) with a response, which situates this discussion particularly within contemporary art arenas.

We would like to invite you to the second event in a series of workshops and lectures, Practising Feminism, which considers The feminist subject "in the room" hence "brings others down" not only by talking about unhappy topics such as sexism but by exposing how happiness is sustained by erasing the signs of not getting along. Feminists do kill joy in a certain sense: they disturb the very fantasy that happiness can be found in certain places.

The figure of a classroom killjoy reflects our willingness to call things out. I was inspired by Sara Ahmed’s incredible piece “Feminist Killjoys (And Other Willful Subjects)”, where she recalls a scene many of us are familiar with.
